HALIFAX - The No. 3 nationally ranked Saint Mary's Huskies edged the Acadia Axemen 14-12 in the Atlantic University Sport football conference season opener last night.
Craig Leger ran for a touchdown and quarterback Nathan Beeler hooked up with receiver Carl Hardwick for another for the Huskies, who took a 14-7 lead into the half. The Axemen managed a safety and a James Michener field goal in the second half, but that's as close as they came.
Acadia's Kevin Avery hauled in touchdown pass from quarterback Keith Lockwood in the first half.
Saint Mary's was without star quarterback and Hec Crighton Trophy winner Erik Glavic, who is improving steadily from a torn ACL in last year's Uteck Bowl, but did not dress for the opener.
Axemen defensive back Mike Miller of Riverview recorded four and a half tackles and linebacker Mike MacLeod, also of Riverview, had one.
The Mount Allison Mounties open the season today against the St. Francis Xavier X-Men at 2 p.m. in Antigonish, N.S.
