The top 20 hang loose

TORONTO - Students, choreographers and teachers are among the 20 dancers chosen to compete in the inaugural season of "So You Think You Can Dance Canada."

The 10 male and 10 female dancers were revealed in a two-hour episode Wednesday, in which 200 hopefuls were whittled down in a brutal "finals" competition.

Specializing in everything from ballet to ballroom and hip hop to salsa, the Top 20 range in age from 18 to 29.

CTV says there were more than 2,500 auditions for the reality series.

As in the U.S. version of the show, the 20 dancers will be split into 10 couples and be expected to learn a new dance routine each week. They will compete for viewer votes in their first two-hour performance episode Oct. 8. The following night one male and one female dancer will be sent home.

Hosted by MuchMusic's Leah Miller, "So You Think You Can Dance Canada" features judges Tre Armstrong (dancer, choreographer and star of the film "How She Move") and Jean Marc Genereux (international ballroom champion and guest judge/choreographer on the U.S. version of "So You Think You Can Dance").

Alternating third judges include Luther Brown, choreographer for Sean Combs, and Blake McGrath, Season 1 finalist on "So You Think You Can Dance."
