Truro rider wins pro class
RIVER GLADE -- Kyle Elliott of Truro, N.S. won the pro class at the Canadian Motosport Racing Club's final Atlantic fall motocross series race of the season Saturday at River Glade Motocross Park.
Elliott and Kyle Chatham of Riverview ganged up on national No. 33 rider Johnny Montes of Saint John and then had a two-way battle right to the checkered flag, with Elliott taking the win at the wire.
Thirty-one years after the first race at "The Glade", Saturday's event saw over three 300 entries from the Maritimes, Quebec and one from France.
Riverview's Mike Underhill rode the wheels off his Yamaha to take the win in the junior MX-2 class over points leader Ka-Liong Hiew of Saint John and 35 other riders.
Ryan Mackay of Coverdale continued his dominance of the 85cc 7-11 class as he won both motos.
Mounties QB earns honour
SACKVILLE -- Football quarterback Kelly Hughes was named the Mount Allison University Joey's Pizza and Pasta athlete of the week yesterday.
The third-year veteran from Brampton, Ont. went 16-for-29 for 244 yards and two touchdowns leading the Mounties to a 42-21 win over the Acadia Axemen in Atlantic University Sport football conference action Saturday to become the school's all-time leading passer.
The previous career passing yards mark at Mount Allison was 4,238 yards held by Dan Capone (1997-2000). Hughes now has 4,461 in his career. Hughes also ran for 152 yards and a touchdown in the victory. He leads the AUS in several passing categories, including total offence, total offensive plays, total offensive yards, total offensive touchdowns, passing average per game, passing yards, passing completions, and passings touchdowns.
Hughes is currently enrolled in third-year commerce.
Other nominees this week were: Allie MacLean (women's soccer) and Kohei Yamashita (men's soccer).
Soccer players sweep UdeM awards
Soccer players Patrick Gautreau of Memramcook and Karine Roy of Petit-Rocher were selected the Université de Moncton Subway athletes of the week yesterday.
Gautreau scored four goals at the UdeM Aigles Bleus men's team won one game and tied another in Atlantic University Sport weekend play. The Aigles Bleus, who downed the St. Francis Xavier X-Men 5-2 and tied the Cape Breton Capers 1-1, are tied for third place in the conference with a 3-2-3 record.
Gautreau is tied with Paul Craig of the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers for first place in AUS scoring with seven goals in eight games.
"Patrick scored three goals against the X-Men Sunday and the tying goal on Saturday against the Capers," said Moncton coach Sylvain Rastello.
Roy was a dominant player for the UdeM Aigles Bleues women's team during two weekend games.
"Roy showed her leadership qualities," said Rastello. "She is our captain and an experienced player in her fourth year. She is also involved in the community."
Royals turn back Highlanders
The Riverview High Royals ran their record to 9-0-2 in Northeast Conference high school field hockey play with a 2-0 win over the Bernice MacNaughton Highlanders yesterday.
Nicole Babineau notched both Royals goals while Allie LeBlanc recorded the shutout.
Riverview High visits the Mathieu-Martin Vedettes Oct. 14 in its final regular season game.
The Royals host the conference regional tournament Oct. 18.
