Police focus on intersections

Police are asking Metro Moncton drivers and pedestrians to stop trying to race the yellow light at local intersections.

Some near collisions at intersections have Codiac RCMP's Traffic Enforcement Section paying closer attention to whether or not people are obeying traffic control signals.

"From the information we're receiving and what we're seeing when we're out and about, people are speeding up and trying to race the yellow lights," says Cpl. Mike Gaudet.

"We're getting a lot of close calls."

Gaudet says when drivers see a yellow light at an intersection, it means slow down, because the red light is on its way. The only people who should enter an intersection on a yellow light are those who are so close it's impossible to stop safely.

The risk is someone's going to run a red light and collide with another vehicle or a pedestrian.

Gaudet also says some pedestrians are trying to cross the street on the yellow light, hoping they have enough time to make it to the other side. This places them directly in the path of on-coming traffic when the light changes.

Police will concentrate their efforts on several problem intersections over the next few months and those caught disobeying traffic signals will be face a minimum fine of $172.50.

It is good to see the police taking interest in these area's but...This is the first city that I have seen that the yellow light changes so quickly. If you are driving 50kmh and see the light turn yellow you have to almost slam on the brakes to stop in time for the red. In other cities if the light turns yellow you have time to decide if you are close enough to make it thru or stop. Here in the GMA you just have to stand on the brakes and hope you dont get hit from behind. I think if the yellow light would last a second longer it would cause less accidents.
