ST. STEPHEN - A mill in western New Brunswick has laid off more than 40 employees indefinitely amid the downturn in the U.S. economy.

The Flakeboard Co. in St. Stephen makes particleboard and fibreboard products used in things like cabinets and furniture, much of it for the American market.

The St. Stephen Chamber of Commerce agrees the company has no choice but to lay off workers with the slowdown in the U.S. economy.

The mill employs about 300 people.
