WHEATON SETTLEMENT - A man in this small, rural community, west of Salisbury, took the phrase 'living on the road' a little too literally.

This house almost made it to its destination on the Goddard Road near River Glade late Monday evening, but the final turn deposited it crossways in the road. The building was moved about two kilometres before it fell off its skids blocking the road entirely.

The Goddard Road, which links the Homestead Road with the Wheaton Settlement Road, was blocked Monday night and most of yesterday after a house under construction, which was being moved on logs, became wedged across the road.

The wood-frame house, which measured 20 feet by 60 feet, (six-by-18 metres) was mired and got stuck as it was being turned onto the property where it was to be moved. RCMP said the building was moved from a lot five kilometres away.

"If he didn't get stuck, we probably never even would have noticed it was moved," RCMP Sgt. Maurice Comeau of the Caledonia detachment said.

The owner of the house was charged with moving a house without a permit and faces a fine in the $250 range, RCMP said.

Department of transportation spokeswoman Tracey Burkhardt said no permits for moving houses are ever issued in the spring or winter because road conditions are too tricky.

The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Monday. When it became apparent there was no way to move the building for 24 hours, police and the department of transportation decided to close the road.

The road closure did not cause any inconvenience because there were other routes to get in and out, RCMP said, adding there are few if any other residents nearby.

Burkhardt said the homeowner was responsible for moving the house off the road. Heavy equipment was brought in, at the homeowner's expense, yesterday afternoon to move it onto the lot.

Sgt. Comeau said the case of the stuck house was a new one for him. "I've never heard of anything like this."
