Foundation needs volunteer to plan Sept. 14 Metro charity run

The Terry Fox Foundation is still looking for someone to organize their annual Terry Fox Run for Metro Moncton.

"We try to keep it very, very grass roots so we don't go out hiring people so we need the volunteers to step up," said Bailey White, Public relations Co-ordinator of the New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island branch of the Terry Fox Foundation.

The national day for the run is Sept. 14.

"People have organized entire runs by themselves, (but) for Moncton that's a big centre so you'd want more than one volunteer," she said.

Last year's Terry Fox Run was organized by two people, one of whom now has a small child to look after and the other has been ill.

Provincial director Onne de Boer wasn't sure exactly how many people were involved last year, but said Metro Moncton would need up seven to 10 committee members working in advance and 15 to 20 volunteers for the day of.

One hundred and fifty area residents raised $8,500 last year, and 87 cents from every one of those dollars went to the National Cancer Institute of Canada.

de Boer said whoever signs up for the job likely won't be doing it alone. Some committee members are expected to return from last year.

"When you have a good committee around, that lead role becomes a lot easier," said de Boer.

They are also looking for what they call "Terry's team members," cancer survivors willing to speak to the media or at public events who can share their stories.

But the most important thing is still finding the event organizer.

"That's always a possibility that there is no run if nobody steps up," said de Boer.

The organizer will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Terry Fox Community Run. This includes recruiting volunteers, setting up the route, seeking donated items, event administration and promotion.

Come on! The Canadian Association of New York City gets more volunteers, more runners and raise more money than Moncton?!
