QUALICUM BEACH, B.C. - New Brunswick champion Drew McCafferty of the Moncton Golf and Country Club opened the Canadian men's mid-amateur golf championship at the Pleasant Glen Golf Resort with a score of 3-over-par 75 yesterday.

McCafferty's score was the lowest of eight New Brunswickers in the 132-player field.

Starting on the 10th hole, McCafferty went out in 2-over-par 38 and then came home with a 1-over-par 37 on his inward nine.

His game featured two birdies, 11 pars and five bogeys. After posting eight straight pars on his back nine, his only blemish was a bogey six on the final hole.

Eric Coffin of the Fredericton Golf and Curling Club, who registered the top finish by a New Brunswick player (40th) at the Canadian men's amateur at Lethbridge, Alta., last week, turned in a score of 76.

Dale Kinnie of the Moncton Golf and Country Club was 77 while Ken Comeau, also of Moncton, and Ed Reevey of the Riverside Country Club at Rothesay, were both 78.

Adam Atkinson of Fredericton was 80 while Tony MacKinnon and Jamie Arbeau, also of Fredericton, posted scores of 81.

After round one of the interprovincial team championship, the New Brunswick team of McCafferty, Kinnie, Reevey and MacKinnon was fifth and right in the mix of the race for the title.

New Brunswick is 14-over-par 230 and just five strokes behind first-place Manitoba at 225. Nova Scotia is second at 226 while Alberta and Ontario are tied for third at 228.

The team championship is decided over 36 holes and runs in conjunction with the opening two rounds of the 72-hole championship.
