N.B. hoopsters roll at nats
CHARLOTTETOWN -- New Brunswick got off on the right foot at the Canadian under-17 basketball championships here yesterday.
The U17 boys opened the tournament with a lip-biting 74-70 over Nova Scotia while the N.B. U17 girls downed Newfoundland and Labrador 90-60.
Anthony Sears of Riverview led the N.B. boys with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists while Joel Everett of Woodstock hooped 14 and Calvin LeBlanc of Fredericton netted 12.
Robbie Daley of Fredericton led the N.B. girls with 23 points while Emily Corey of Fredericton added 13. Rebecca Nuttall of Riverview had nine assists and three steals while Moncton's Samantha Kaminsky came up with five assists.
The tournament continues until Saturday.
Tennis tourney slated for Dieppe
The Dieppe masters tennis tournament will be held this weekend at the Dieppe tennis Club.
The event is slated for Saturday and Sunday. Deadline for entries is tomorrow at 6 p.m. A number of players are expected from P.E.I.
Meanwhile, the N.B. Masters championship is slated for the Riverview Tennis Club Sept. 13-14.
Hayley Wilson keeps junior girls title
PETITCODIAC -- Hayley Wilson defended her junior girls club championship at the Petitcodiac Golf and Country Club yesterday.
Wilson shot a 92 to claim the title.
Runner-up was Brooke Burgess while the low net winner was Laura Wesselius.
The junior boys champion was Jacob Wesselius who carded an 84.
Tied for second with 88s were Cory Lounsbury, Jarrett Crossman and Nolan Alward.
The men's and women's championships are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
Boating instruction offered in fall
The Shediac Power and Sail Squadron, a group of volunteers involved in teaching safe boating, will hold a registration night for the 2008 fall courses.
In 2009, all operators of any powered pleasure craft will be required to obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator's Card and carry it with them while operating the craft.
Among the course offered by the Shediac Power and Sail Squadron, The Boat Pro and Boating courses will give you the opportunity to learn more about boating and obtain your Pleasure Craft Operator's Card.
Registration will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 10th, 7-9 p.m. at the community centre at Sobey's on Vaughn Harvey Boulevard and the Pointe-du-Chene Yacht Club.

Yastrzemski has triple bypass heart surgery
BOSTON -- Hall of Famer Red Sox player Carl Yastrzemski, the last player to hit for the Triple Crown, was resting comfortably last night after having triple bypass heart surgery.
