Boy raises money for friend with cancer
Published Monday October 6th, 2008

FREDERICTON - Grade 5 student Matthew Hynes wants to raise $56,000 for a schoolmate who is suffering from her third bout with cancer.
And the little boy from Fredericton plans to do it one inch at a time.
Hynes, an avid user of virtual globe software Google Earth, measured the distance from Royal Road Elementary School to MacKenzie Carr's house.
According to the software, the distance is 56,000 inches, and a loonie happens to measure roughly an inch in diameter.
That's why the 10-year-old hopes to raise $56,000 to help Carr, a friend since kindergarten. The Hynes family has already contributed $500 to get the fundraiser started.
"I came home (from school one day) and just told my mom that I really wanted to do something to help her, Hynes says. "We pitched about 100 ideas and eventually I realized that pretty much everybody has a spare loonie to give."
Hynes described his friend as a "really nice, shy and quiet girl."
