Public education needed to stop the abuse

Letter of the day

To The Editor:
Regarding the previous letters to the editor in response to Brett Anningson's column titled "What can we do to lessen violence, abuse?" I have to agree and I'm organizing an event specifically to heighten awareness of this very issue.
Inspired by the old saying, "You can't understand a person's experience until you've walked a mile in their shoes," men from all walks of life will literally walk one mile through downtown Moncton in women's high-heeled shoes on Thursday, Oct. 16.
Taking place during the YWCA Week Without Violence, the event is being held to educate the community to take action to prevent rape, sexual assault and gender violence.
Proceeds from sponsored walkers in the event will benefit the Coalition Against Abuse in Relationship's (CAAR) violence prevention efforts, and support services for victims.
CAAR is a non-profit organization representing many service providers (www.coalitionagainstabuse.com) whose members work directly or indirectly with victims and/or perpetrators of violence in relationships.
Created in 1990, it attempts to improve awareness of and access to services to the victims and/or perpetrators of abuse through public education and lobbying activities.
Twenty-seven women have been killed in New Brunswick in acts of domestic homicide as of February 2005, three of these occurred prior to 1990.
The sentences handed out in these cases were atrocious!
Silhouettes from the NB Silent Witness project will be on display in the lobby during the event (www.silentwitness.ca).
If you want to be involved in helping to break and/or prevent the cycle of violence, please visit www.camcogroup.com/walk. By supporting this unique, newsworthy and dynamic event, you will be stating that violence against women and children is not just a women's issue, it affects everyone and must be solved by the entire community.
