From left to right: Marco Bertolin, Joanne Cox, Liette Hebert, Jordy Jeppesen, Mary Helen McDonald, Tifani Chowdhry, and Martin Roy from Spielo are nominated in the Community Service category.

With an office in Moncton since 2001, Asurion is a leading provider of enhanced services to the wireless telecommunications industry, globally.

In keeping with the company's strong community support mandate, Asurion Moncton continues to make community service an integral part of its corporate culture. In fact, they're on track once again to exceed their impressive goal of 1,000 volunteer hours by the end of the year.

In addition to donating annually to the United Way through payroll deductions, staff give generously of their volunteer time for community service efforts on behalf of charitable organizations that include the Heart & Stroke Foundation; Big Brothers/Big Sisters; Children's Wish Foundation; CIBC Run for the Cure; Sue Stultz Turkey Drive and Christmas Daddies. From fundraising through bake sales, 50/50 draws, donations and the like, to fielding teams -- no matter what the challenge, the community benefits from their stellar dedication to helping others.

Asurion Moncton's membership in The Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce provides them with a "vital networking tool in the community", and they take their service role in that community very seriously. Being named a finalist for a Greater Moncton Excellence Award in the Community Service category is "certainly an honour" for Asurion Moncton, a recognition that reflects their level of commitment.

"Community service is a passion of ours. We enjoy being involved with the United Way Day of Caring every year, and we've partnered on numerous occasions with Moncton Headstart. We're part of the community," says people services co-ordinator Larry Lane. "Isn't it everyone's responsibility?"

KMA CONSULTANTS INC.

Specializing in fundraising and communications, KMA Consultants Inc. works exclusively with not-for-profit organizations.

Established in 1995, the company has offices in both Moncton and Toronto, with clients nation-wide. It's an enjoyable business for partner and president Ken MacLeod.

"I think it's that we help good people in good organizations succeed," he says. "Our work is satisfying because we are engaged in the not-for-profit sector. It's a sector that's incredibly important in communities all across Canada. Not-for-profit organizations influence literally every sector . . . health care, education, social services, sports, arts and culture. We think of these organizations as the heart and soul of communities."

That's certainly true of the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra (NBYO), thriving as a result of KMA's commitment to community service. Over the past six years, Ken MacLeod has served as parent volunteer, board member and president of NBYO. His vision, leadership and "hands-on involvement" has made him the "principal architect" behind the Orchestra's remarkable success. Partners and administrative staff also account for about 1,500 volunteer hours annually, and sizeable fundraising efforts continue to help young people grow their musical talent.

Being short-listed for a GMEA in the Community Service category is "flattering and a great honour" for KMA Consultants Inc..

"(It's) the idea that the Chamber recognizes that businesses have a lot to contribute, and I think the other part of that, and just as important, is that when we set out to help," says MacLeod, ". . . we end up being beneficiaries in that too."

SPIELO

SPIELO (a GTECH Company) has definitely established itself in the global entertainment equipment market.

Nominated in the Community Service category of the Greater Moncton Excellence Awards, the company has proven by example that it's also committed to their local community.

"SPIELO has been a part of the Greater Moncton community for the past 18 years," says Don Doucet, senior director at SPIELO. "Our founder grew up in Moncton, and a large portion of our over 400 local employees grew up in this region as well. We are very aware of the issues that face our community, and feel strongly that it is our responsibility to give back to our community by proactively supporting the many charitable organizations that provide such important services to those in need."

Embracing corporate values, company employees eagerly volunteer in whatever way needed on behalf of several initiatives that include Canada's first After School Advantage computer lab at Forest Glen School; the Peter Gzowski Invitational Golf Tournament to benefit literacy; the United Way; Portage Atlantic, a non-profit organization helping youths age 14 to 22 recover from drug addiction, the Sue Stultz Turkey Drive and Christmas Family sponsorship.

Given that commitment, being honoured in this way means a great deal.

"Being short-listed in the Community Services category recognizes the long hours and hard work that our employees have selflessly offered towards worthy charitable causes, and it provides a clear sense that those efforts are making a recognizable and positive impact on our community," says Doucet, "which is very rewarding."
