Dylan Alexander Jackson, 28, of Doaktown, and Hunter Nash England, 21, of Moncton, both appeared in Moncton provincial court by phone from jail on Wednesday. They were charged in late April with mischief for allegedly doing more than $5,000 in damage to a jail cell at the Southeast Regional Correctional Centre, committing arson and possessing incendiary material – a lighter – on Jan. 10.

England entered not guilty pleas to the charges, but was then convinced not to by the co-accused. Neither accused has a lawyer for this case and Jackson said they have to get lawyers before entering pleas.

Both will attempt to get lawyers and said they want to have bail hearings once they do. However both men are in remand awaiting trials on more serious charges and are remanded on those, so they won’t be released regardless of what happens with a future bail hearing on the arson charges.

Jackson told the judge on Wednesday that he has a lawyer for his other case and needs to speak to him to see if he will defend him in the arson case. It’s the fourth time Jackson has told a judge he wants to talk to his lawyer before pleading since he was charged less than two weeks ago.

The two men return to court May 29 to plead to the charges and set bail hearing dates if required.
