No Bones about it, Kathy Reichs proud of daughter's first novel

Mystery author Kathy Reichs, whose 11 novels have soared to No. 1 on the London Times bestsellers' list and all have reached the top 10 on the New York Times list and are the basis for one of the most popular shows on American network television, is proud of all her accomplishments.

However, the author's voice climbs another octave and her pride is also amplified when she talks about her daughter.

Kerry Reichs, the 37-year-old daughther of 60-year-old Kathy, has just released her first novel, The Best Days of Someone Else's Life, and it's obvious the mother is more comfortable talking about her child's success than her own.

"It's a great book and I'm very proud of her," said Kathy, a Montreal native who works as a professor of anthropology at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte.

"It's a satirical look at wedding days and it's a lot of fun. She took little bits of our family history and sprinkled them throughout the book.

"The best news is that she's signed on for two more books. Things are going well for her."

No surprise there.

After all, Kathy's overwhelming success with her semi-autobiographical series based on the life Temperance Brennan has inspired the television hit Bones, which is beginning its fourth season on Fox.

The books have topped the charts all over the world and the TV series attracts millions of viewers every week.

Reichs is also a board-certified forensic anthropologist in Montreal so she divides her time between Charlotte and Montreal.

She's also found a bit of time to be in Moncton for a couple of days next month as a special guest of the Frye Festival, Moncton's fast-growing annual literary festival.

On Oct. 26 at 2 p.m., she will appear at the Moncton High School Auditorium for the festival's second community read program. Tickets are available through the City of Moncton's ticketing network (www.tickets.moncton.ca) and the cost is $20 for adults and $12 for students.

"I think it's wonderful to see a lot of literary festivals being organized all over North America," the author said.

"It's good for books and that means it's good for all of us."

On Oct. 26 at 7 p.m., she will be the special guest at the Magnum Opus Gala Art Auction, presented by Brunswick News in support of the Moncton Public Library. Besides her address, there will be an art auction to raise money to buy books for the library.

On Oct. 27, Reichs will visit Moncton City Hall as well as French and English high school students from Moncton. She will also visit Tracadie-Sheila during the trip.

Reichs' 10th novel, Bones to Ashes, was set in northern New Brunswick.

Her latest novel, Devil Bones, is a best seller and she's putting the finishing touches on her 12th novel, which has the working title 206 Bones. It will be released next summer or early fall.
