HALIFAX - Nova Scotia's blood supply has dwindled to the point that some elective surgeries could be postponed.
The Capital District Health Authority said this week that the blood supply is at its lowest level since 2001, when waves of people were inspired to give blood after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.
Dr. Irene Sadek, director of transfusion services for Capital Health, said that if the shortage extends for another week the health authority might not be able to meet its needs.
Hoping for an influx of donors, Canadian Blood Services in Halifax will open on Remembrance Day between 12:30 and 4 p.m.
Sadek said the common blood types O and A are the most badly needed.
