SUSSEX - A young Apohaqui man will spend two years in prison for trafficking cocaine.

Corey John Cunningham, 21, admitted in November to selling cocaine for more than a year.

In addition to seizing a set of scales and $1,620 in his pocket, police also found three ounces of cocaine during a search in Apohaqui last Aug. 8, said David Lutz, federal prosecutor for the case.

Members of the District 3 RCMP's plain-clothes unit had executed a warrant at Cunningham's grandmother's house in the quiet community, but were directed by Cunningham to a shed across the street where he kept his stash of drugs.

In Sussex provincial court yesterday, Lutz asked Judge Henrik Tonning to consider a federal sentence of two years, or two years less a day to be served in a provincial facility. Tonning said because of the treatment programs available for rehabilitation, the federal system would have more to offer Cunningham.

Along with the two-year sentence for trafficking cocaine, under the Criminal Code Cunningham is also prohibited from possessing firearms or explosives for 10 years.

Cunningham's arrest last August came two months after the sentencing of popular butcher George Moore, who admitted to trafficking cocaine, OxyContin, marijuana and ecstasy from his Apohaqui business while he was on parole for similar crimes.

Moore, 61, is now serving six years in prison.
