Spring cleanup going well

Annual garbage pickup in Moncton is under way this week
It's spring clean-up week in Moncton and residents are reminded to be courteous and considerate as this yearly ritual takes place.
"It's going good, very good actually," said Mayhew Lloy, City of Moncton works supervisor. "With some of the work contracted out and the combination of city and contracted trucks, we're keeping up to date and we're getting everything collected from the night before so it's not dragging to the next day."
All this week on regular garbage days, Moncton area residents have the chance to lug their old, rundown furniture, appliances and other debris to their curb sides and have it taken away.
Lloy said thus far residents have been relatively compliant with the regulations of the pick-up, but urges everyone to remember that they can't accept hazardous waste items like paint or car parts. Residents can take those to a drop-off Thursday at the Kay Community Centre between 2 and 7 p.m. or to the Westmorland Albert Solid Waste Commission on Berry Mills Road at any time during business hours.
The works supervisor also adds that people should try as much as possible to observe the same bylaw in effect every week of garbage collection -- which prohibits homeowners from putting their garbage out prior to 7 p.m. the night before scheduled pickup.
Following Moncton's spring cleanup, Dieppe will conduct its Special Spring Garbage Collection on May 20 and 23 and Riverview's Spring Clean-Up Week will begin closer to the end of the month, on May 26.
Lloy said it appears as if the clean-up in Moncton will be completed on schedule, by Friday night, and reminds everyone to be safety conscious when they put their garbage out.
"We have to make sure piles don't spill out onto the street and create an unsafe situation for people driving and walking," he said. "Just keep clear of the sidewalk and streets when piling spring piles and hopefully it will be a good clean up and everyone can get rid of their debris and have a nice clean city and get everything done safely."
