Residents of Cap-Pelé will finally have access to reading material in their village.

After decades of asking for a public library, the provincial government announced a plan to build one in the town.

During a news conference this week, Finance Minister Victor Boudreau announced the province will be putting $400,000 toward the $1.2-million structure.

"One of the first steps to being self sufficient is being able to read and write and learn in a positive environment," said Boudreau. "It's been tens and tens of years that Cap-Pelé has been asking for its own public library. The province has not only given the green light, but is also contributing funding toward the project."

The building is scheduled to open in 2009. It will be a one level facility, 495 square metres (5,500 square feet). There will be a computer room inside, as well as a library and a multi-functional room.

"I feel this is a very worthwhile project," said Boudreau. "Cap-Pelé is one of the rare municipalities of its size not to have a public library so it was very important for us to see this project through."

The village has been requesting a public library since it was established as a community in 1969. Boudreau recognized that this project has been "on the books" for a long time. He said he has been committed to the project since he was elected in September 2006.

The province will be responsible for getting the books retained in the library and the municipal government will be responsible for the operation of it.

Mayor Debbie Dodier invited the public to come to the opening of the building in 2009.

"The municipality of Cap-Pelé is delighted that the provincial government is investing in the project," said Dodier. "A library is an essential tool for the municipality's residents, and this will enable everyone in the community to indulge in the pleasure of reading."
