N.B. musicians to be immortalized on stamps
Stompin' Tom, Edith Butler to be honoured by Canada Post
OTTAWA - A pair of legendary New Brunswick musicians are getting their own postage stamps.
Stompin' Tom Connors and Edith Butler, an Acadian folk songbird who honed her skills in Moncton cafés during the 1960s, will be featured as part of Canada Post's Canadian Recording Artists stamp series.
Joining the pair are Canadian rocker Bryan Adams and Quebec singer Robert Charlebois.
The stamps featuring the singers will be released in June 2009.
The foursome was selected using specialized criteria by a special committee, which included stamp experts, students, executives and other members of the public.
"The artists must have attained worldwide recognition, must have an Order of Canada, and must have paved the way and helped bring the music industry to where it is today," said Canada Post spokeswoman Nicole Lemire.
Connors, whose tune The Hockey Song is a mainstay among fans of Canada's national pastime, was born in Saint John while Butler hails from Paquetville on the province's Acadian peninsula.
This is the second time Canada Post is scheduled to release stamps sporting the mugs of famous Canadian musician.
Joni Mitchell, Paul Anka, Anne Murray and Gordon Lightfoot were bestowed the honour in 2007.
