OTTAWA - One of the world's poorest countries is getting a break on its debt payments.
Canada has forgiven Haiti's $2.3-million debt.
It's part of the federal government's plan to relieve impoverished and heavily indebted countries of their debts to Canada.
Canada has now cancelled a total of $965 million worth of debt owed by poor countries -- including all debt owed by Latin American and Caribbean nations.
Finance Minister Jim Flaherty made the announcement from Chile, where he is attending meetings of the Inter-American Development Bank governors and finance ministers of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Flaherty says the debt relief will let Haiti spend its scarce resources on priorities instead of its liabilities.

Politicians across Canada should know how to properly spell " stupid ".
We have thousands of Canadians living on the streets across the country who can't afford the luxury of a bachelor apartment and even welfare won't help some of them, but we can forget about 965 million dollars worth of money owed to us.
Canada will never get out of the hole like this for damn sure.We are the ones suffering for all this.
Goverment officials still make their hefty 6 digit salary and even bigger bonuses so to them it is ok to forgive and forget.
If we were the ones owing these countries that kind of money do you think they'd do the same in return ?? I dought it...
