BERLIN - A German court has sentenced a Berlin barkeeper to three years and five months in prison after he was convicted of bodily harm with fatal consequences for a drinking match that left his teenage opponent dead.

Aytac Guzelarslan apologized ahead of the trial Friday to the family of 16-year-old Lukas Wels who died after the barkeeper served him more than 45 shots of tequila while filling his own glass mostly with water.

A Berlin health official called the 2007 drinking death "a warning to society."

Government reports have shown a steady increase of teenage binge drinking over recent years, with more teenagers admitted to hospitals with alcohol poisoning.
