Letters to the editor | Casino bad news for our children

To The Editor:

Here it comes again . . . the barrage of "yeas" and "nays" that is always a pleasure to be exposed to when there is an "issue". I want to point out what I read in the March 18 Life & Times section on "Casino Moncton".

The quickfact listed that 53.5 per cent of problem gambling leads to divorce. I am quoting now "others argue that a casino would be a minor addition".

I think it is well above half the children of problem gamblers are on Ritalin --- hey it would only be your child's problem or if you like a "minor addition"!

Like . . . wake up people! Not only do you have a likelihood of becoming a problem gambler, divorce, lose your job or attempt suicide, you are putting your child's mental health at risk.

Shame on you for putting personal pleasure above your child's. Our own mayor says, "I suspect lots more will start happening after that" (of course I am taking that out of context).

Lots more . . . I hope our children can handle it. You do remember the reality of it, children are our future.

Highway 11: the thrill ride

To The Editor:

The Premier of the province has come up with his marvelous self-sufficiency plan. How creative of him. So far we have not seen anything but increases in taxes, fuel, cost of living, increases from NB Power, and people still leaving for out West.

That does not seem very creative to me. The Premier has also introduced a "Brand" to sell the Province "Be . . .in this place" -- what a great place to be in.

I have some creative ideas for this province. Why don't we take Highway 11 and brand it as one of the "Wonders of the world", a highway between Moncton and Bouctouche that will give you an experience of your lifetime.

It will take you through ruts, bumps, grooves, craters, and holes, and you might even end up in the ditch. If you do not bend your rims or break something on your car, we could issue a driving certificate for a job well done and record it on your driving record.

We could even sell bumper stickers saying "I drove through Highway 11 and survived!". We could brand it as a family experience and could make money as a tourist attraction that would help make us more self-sufficient.

We could advertise "Take a drive on Highway 11, bring the whole family and make a day of it by stopping and walking along the highway where you might be lucky enough to find a hub cab or two or three."

Now is that not creative?

Shediac

That's a great idea Ed! Too bad that as a typical NB'er, all you can do is complain and take no action.

The fact of the matter is, gambling is already everywhere. You can go to any number of poker games (legal and not so legal), buy Atlantic Lotto tickets till the cows come home, and spend all your money at shady online casinos. If anything, building a casino will HELP children because parents will be gambling in a reasonably controlled and policed area.

Save the children...come on, people. Have a little more sense than that.

That is a very ludicrous statement John Q...."will HELP children" ....gimme a break. I agree with Cyndi Dobson. I believe our society is going to Hell in a hand basket and a gambling casino is just the tip of the iceberg.
