Letter of the day | The Graham government's top 10 errors

To The Editor:

The Liberal government, under the leadership of Shawn Graham, has only been in power for two years but has already made enough bonehead decisions to last his entire mandate. The following are just some of this government's highly questionable decisions:

1. Increasing the provincial income tax rate.

2. Cancelling the HST rebate on heating bills.

3. Spending $60 million to bail out the Caisse Populaire.

4. Purchasing a new government airplane at a cost of $4 million.

5. Robbing the Environmental Trust Fund of $2 million.

6. Reducing the silviculture budget from $8 million to $4 million and increasing the share that the woodlot owners pay from 20 per cent to 50 per cent.

7. The bailout of the private pension plan of nursing homes.

8. Cancellation of the Early French Immersion Program with no input from parents and other stakeholders.

9. The idiotic new slogan for New Brunswick -- the word "Be" at a cost of $200,000.

10. The bailout of the Royal Oaks Golf course in the amount of $4.8 million.

I guess I can't stop at just 10 boners, so here are a few more gems:

11. One million dollar increase in the Communications Department while demanding other departments to cut cost.

12. Funding was cut to the Quest Care Management program run by the Moncton Youth Residences Inc.

13. $750,000 budgeted for pay raises to all MLAs.

14. Property tax assessments are out of control.

15. NB Power rates increasing AGAIN.

I will give kudos to this government for one thing -- they have become as arrogant in two years as it took the McKenna government to become in 10 years.

James Betts,

Riverview

16. Appointing Lamrock to Education Minister. The only thing he knows about education is that he went to school.

Yes, and he's forgotten everything he learned there.

Don't forget the bogus $180,000 Croll-Lee report, Lamrock's educational "reforms," bankrolling Doug Wilms, silencing teachers...
patronage...

2010 indeed.

Mr. Graham may yet have the last laugh unfortunately. The votes of deadbeats, losers or incompetents are just as valuable as those of the poor saps carrying the load.
I would guess from looking over the list that our premier has already purchased a substantial block of votes.

Well now we can look forward to Uranium exploration resuming 20 km from Moncton, but the government says don't worry about that! So should we assume that the future will hold a mine opening while they are in power, they are not listening to our concerns now, and why should we be concerned about the mining issues, it just causes 100 000 years of toxic waste, to be left in our communities for us to breath in drink and eat, great future for New-Brunswick! This could be our new slogan "NOT THE PLACE TO BE".
