MIRAMICHI - Fire of unknown origin caused extensive damage to the upper floor and roof of an empty two-storey house on near King George Highway and Ledden Street, Miramichi, yesterday afternoon.

Miramichi Fire Chief John Mather said the fire call came in at about 3:30 p.m. with firefighters on the scene for about four hours battling the stubborn fire. The old house empty for a few years had different extensions and build-ons that made trying to extinguish the blaze difficult.

The 17 firefighters on the scene also had to cope with the hot weather as well as the heat of the fire, he added. There was no wind and no nearby structures to worry about, he said.
