
N.B. golfers up for honour

FREDERICTON - He's played in just one event but Paul Hachey's victory in the New Brunswick senior men's championship last week vaulted him to seventh in the season long Allstar Communications Challenge provincial senior men's player of the year competition.
Hachey and Gilles Masse, both of Gowan Brae, finished first and second in the senior championship while John Brown of the Riverside Country club at Rothesay and Herrick Hansen of the Aroostook Valley Golf Club at Four Falls (near Perth-Andover) tied for third.
Brown still maintains his lead in the Allstar Communications Challenge standings with 114.8 points.
He's followed by Pierre Boulet of Hampton with 82 points, while Masse is third with 67.5 points. Guy MacKnight of Country Meadows is fourth with 61.5 points and Hansen is right behind in fifth spot with 61 points. Shane Hayward of Riverside is sixth with 60.5 points and Hachey is seventh with 60 points.
Rounding out the top ten are Jean LeBlanc of Maplewood (52.58 points, eighth), Gary Breen of Hampton (48 points, ninth) and Greg Blake of Fredericton 33 points (10th).
Four events remain in the Allstar Communications Challenge. The competition makes its next stop on Aug. 20 in Bouctouche for the Bouctouche Senior Invitational, followed by the Pokemouche Senior Invitational on Aug. 21. In September the competition heads to Petitcodiac for the Petitcodiac Senior Invitational on Sept. 8 and finally to Hartland for the Covered Bridge Senior Invitational on Sept. 13-14.
n Rain washed out a three-player playoff Tuesday for the Country Meadows Golf Club men's championship.
Phil Mix, Skip Lakey and Shawn Branch were scheduled to take to the course for a three-player 18-hole playoff for the title.
All three players posted scores of 3-over-par 75 last weekend in the rain-shortened 36-hole tourney that was reduced to 18 holes because of rain.
No date has been set for the next try to hold the playoff,
The women's title will also be decided in a playoff. Leanne Richardson and Sandy Comeau posted scores of 80 and will also need a playoff to determine a champion.
