Mathieu Gingras increases lead with 5th-place finish in Edmundston

EDMUNDSTON - Moncton's Mathieu Gingras used a strong finish at the Madawaska Invitational this weekend to build on his lead in the 2008 Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza NB Player of the Year standings. Gingras collected 10 points for his fifth place finish in Edmundston and he now sits at 85 points overall, 30 points ahead of the pack.

Bruce Wellman, from the host Edmundston Fraser Golf Club, claimed victory in the Madawaska Invitational after posting a 36-hole total of 143.

Closely linked to the Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza Player of the Year Challenge is the Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza Estabrooks Cup. The Estabrooks Cup is a Ryder Cup style format that pits the top golfers of the North against the top golfers of the South in a battle for New Brunswick's golf supremacy. Twelve player teams are selected for both the North and South to compete in a two-day tournament containing four-ball matches, foursome matches and singles matches. The all-star competition will be held Oct. 4 -- 5 at the Edmundston Fraser Golf Club.

With only 3 events remaining on the schedule, the races are heating up for positions on the North and South teams. Local players currently holding down automatic team spots in the South as members of the top 10 include Gingras, Dave Freeman, Petitcodiac, Tom Keddy, Hillsborough, Jean Mainville and Matt Layden both of Fox Creek Golf Club.
