FREDERICTON - Route 116 between Harcourt and Fredericton has been reopened to traffic after a torrential downpour this month wiped out a bridge over a tributary of the Richibucto River.

Known as the Salmon River Road, the bridge was washed out during the New Brunswick Day weekend after an estimated eight inches of rain falling over the area causing rivers and streams to swell. The site is about 65 kilometres north of Moncton.

A spokesman with the Department of Transportation said the road is safe to travel once again. There is still some work to do at the site but traffic can get by safely, she said.

Also affected by the heavy rains was a culvert along the Pacific Junction Road in Berry Mills, wiped out by the flooded Jonathan Creek.

Other areas with water damage were Nackawic where part of the Old Bridge Road was washed out, St. Francois-de-Madawaska and two roads in the Miramichi area.
