Forgetting Sarah Marshall

This week's new releases, by Jay Bobbin of Zap2it, are rated on a scale of one to four, with H equivalent to a poor rating and HHHH meaning excellent.

IRON MAN

***

Having lived more than a bit of life himself, Robert Downey Jr. makes an ideal match for the roles of industrialist Tony Stark and his superhero alter ego in director Jon Favreau's highly entertaining take on the Marvel comic. After discovering a nefarious plot to use some of his creations for evil, he uses the same technology to create a suit that turns him into the high-flying title character; Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges and Terrence Howard fortify the cast, but the members of the special-effects team are stars of the film, too.

FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL

***

The forgetting isn't so easy for a composer (Jason Segel, "How I Met Your Mother") after his television star girlfriend (Kristen Bell, "Veronica Mars") leaves him in this raunchy comedy from producer Judd Apatow, who keeps this in the vein of "Knocked Up" and "Superbad." Trying to shake his grief, the jilted guy goes to a Hawaiian resort where the other guests turn out to include his ex-love and her new rock-star beau (comedian Russell Brand). Mila Kunis ("That '70s Show") and other members of the Apatow stock company, including Paul Rudd and Jonah Hill, also appear.

MY THREE SONS: SEASON ONE, VOLUME ONE

***

One of television's classic sitcoms makes its DVD debut, with Fred MacMurray in a very paternal mode as Steve Douglas, widower and father of three growing boys. Disney-show veteran Tim Considine, Don Grady and Stanley Livingston played the younger roles when the show began, with Livingston's brother Barry joining the show later. William Frawley, alias Fred Mertz of "I Love Lucy," also stars as Steve's live-in father-in-law, Bub.

SPIDER-MAN

2002

***

Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) becomes the Marvel Comics hero after being bitten by a radioactive spider; Kirsten Dunst plays his true love, Mary Jane.

n Little Screen appears in Life & Times each Friday.
