St. FX claims title in UdeM women's hockey tourney

X-Women top Dal Tigers 4-1 in final

The St. Francis Xavier X-Women won the annual Université de Moncton women's pre-season hockey tournament yesterday at the J-Louis-Levesque Arena.

St. FX downed the Dalhousie Tigers 4-1 in the tournament final. Brayden Ferguson, Laura Grant, Christina Davis and Suzanne Fenerty scored for the X-Women. Kim Carcary replied for the Tigers.

The St. Thomas Tommies blanked Collège Laflèche of Trois-Rivieres, Que. 2-0 in the third-place game yesterday.

The host Moncton Aigles Bleues took fifth spot with a 2-1 shootout win over the Saint Mary's Huskies in the fifth-place game. Marieve Provost scored the winner in the shootout for Moncton. Joanie Dubois tallied in regulation time for the Aigles Bleues while Melissa Young countered for the Huskies.

"I was happy with our play," said Moncton head coach Denis Ross. "I saw progress being made during the weekend and our systems started to click today. The players are more in the game."

The Mount Allison Mounties came up with a 4-1 win over the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers in the seventh-place game.

Katelyn Morton, with a pair, Jillian Greene and Jenna Briggs scored for the Mounties. Janelle Parent had the lone Panthers goal.

In semifinals on Saturday, St. FX downed Collège Laflèche 5-1 and Dalhousie edged St. Thomas 5-4.

In a consolation semifinal, Moncton beat Mount Allison 7-4. The Aigles Bleues received two goals from Marie-Ève Couture and singles from Janie LeBlanc, Valérie Boisclair, Joanie Dubois, Johanie Thibeault and Marie-Hélène Plourde. Kendall Boyd scored twice and Laura Lighthall and Katelyn Morton each had a goal for the Mounties.

Saint Mary's doubled UPEI 4-2 in the other consolation semifinal.
