BARACHOIS - Tommy Fitzgerald of Summerside, P.E.I. showed why he is one of the top demolition drivers in the region by outlasting a field of 11 competitors to capture the demolition derby at the Atlantic enduro and demolition championships Saturday at the Centre for Speed.

Fitzgerald drove his North American Auto Wreckers 1985 LTD through various crashes to claim two wins in the final event of the 2008 stock car racing season.

Fitzgerald was able to disable the 1997 Plymouth Breeze driven by Jordon Veinotte of Porter's Lake, N.S. to claim the demolition derby victory.

Fitzgerald also visited victory lane in the figure eight feature. Alain Robichaud of St. Ignace was second and Jean-Yves Gauvin of Allardville came in third.

Joel Despres of Scoudouc also enjoyed a good afternoon with three visits to victory lane in a full contact heat, back up bag race and a figure eight heat.

Twenty-three cars took the start for the 100-lap endurance event. Bruce Hache of Beresford, the 2008 wildman division champion from Blue Mountain Speedway in Big River, was able to avoid a number of wrecks during the event to claim the win, ahead of Mark Collicott of Tignish, P.E.I. and Jean-Marc Richard of St. Ignace.

Veinotte won the other full contact race.

Jocelyne Marcoux of St. Ignace claimed the powder puff race driving her husband Don's 2008 thundercat championship race car. Nancy Leger of Cap-Pele crossed the finish line in second followed by Nicole Vautour of St. Ignace.

In the street-legal drag racing event, the fastest competitor was Alain Robichaud of St. Ignace.
