The majority of Halloween-related injuries treated at B.C. Children's Hospital are caused by the improper use of fireworks, says the hospital's emergency department medical director.

The hospital urges families who want to enjoy fireworks at Halloween to find an event in their community that is hosted by professionals.

B.C. Children's Hospital offers these Halloween safety tips for parents and children:

-- A costume should not be longer than knee length to ensure children don't trip or fall while walking up and down stairs.

-- Don't let little children wear high heels.

-- Put reflective tape on the front and back of costumes, especially if they are dark colours, to make children more visible to cars.

-- Makeup is better than masks, which can block vision. Test the makeup on your child's wrist for 24 hours in advance to make sure there's no allergic reaction.

-- Inspect treat bags and remove any items that look as if they have been tampered with, or pose a choking hazard.
