Woman was travelling in car involved in collision with RCMP cruiser

A Shippagan woman was killed Thursday after her car collided head-on with an RCMP car in Lamèque.
"She died at the scene," says RCMP Cpl. Mike Gaudet, adding the woman was not wearing her seat-belt.
The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Route 113. Gaudet says investigators have spoken to witnesses and determined a vehicle being driven by an 18-year-old man crossed over the centre line into oncoming traffic, colliding with the police car.
The 18-year-old woman who died was a passenger. Gaudet said driver is in intensive care at the Tracadie-Sheila Hospital but is expected to recover.
"The policeman suffered a broken hand and other minor injuries and he was pretty shaken up by the incident," says Gaudet. "He tried to avoid the other car but it was head-on."
The Mountie, who works out of Lamèque, was taken to hospital but released later that night.
Gaudet says road conditions are believed to have been a major factor in the crash.
"The road was slippery and snow-packed," he says, of the stretch of highway on the Lamèque Plain.
Gaudet says the victim's name has not been released, but she attended high school in Shippagan.
