ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - A Newfoundland man who pleaded guilty to killing his girlfriend and dismembering her body says he did it because he thought she was cheating on him, a court heard yesterday.

At the beginning of a four-day sentencing hearing for Warren White, lawyers played a videotape that showed him confessing to police that he strangled Amanda Power and later "chopped her up." On the tape, White says he had consumed Clonazepam, a drug used to decrease seizures or anxiety, then argued with Power because he thought she was unfaithful.

On June 6, 2008, Power's lower torso was found in a suitcase by children playing in the backyard of White's home in a leafy St. John's neighbourhood.
