The year 2005 is memorable for many reasons.

Sidney Crosby was drafted into the NHL, the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI began and Justice John Gomery's inquiry into the sponsorship scandal grabbed headlines.

But wine lovers will have their own well-aged reason to remember 2005 if all the fanfare surrounding the 2005 Bordeaux vintage is true.

Metro Moncton grape nuts will have a chance to make new memories this weekend as 19 brands of the 2005 Bordeaux vintage are launched at 10 a.m. at the World Wine & Food Expo at the Coliseum Agrena.

Bordeaux wine is produced in the Bordeaux region of France, and the 2005 vintage has been deemed the wine of a lifetime by some critics.

"The 2005 vintage is highly sought-after. Both Robert Parker and James Suckling have both called this vintage extraordinary," said NB Liquor spokeswoman Nora Lacey.

She said the event was able to secure one case of each of the 19 brands.

"To my knowledge this is the first year we have had such rare brand come into the market place," said Lacey.

"They only came out in small quantities."

Sommelier Robert Noël will offer a preview of the wines, entitled Bordeaux 101, at the Delta Beauséjour at 6 p.m. today.

The price of the event is $50 per participant.

Another tasting that will feature all 19 brands will be held on Thursday at the Delta at a price of $120.

There are 24 places available for each event. For more information call 854-4344.
