Halifax Fairlanes wins world title
HALIFAX -- Halifax Fairlanes won the world men's candlepin bowling championship on their home lanes Saturday afternoon.
Halifax Fairlanes, led by Matt McPhee's 463 triple, beat Crazy Train of Massachusetts 1,940-1,856 in the final.
Halifax Fairlanes downed MacLaughlin Trucking, also of Halifax, and Crazy Train defeated Total Chaos of New Hampshire in semifinals.
Crazy Train beat Fredericton Kingswood 1,887-1,825 in a quarter-final matchup. New Brunswick's other entries, Moncton Fairlanes/Mrs. Dunster's and Campbellton Lions, were eliminated in the opening round of the playoffs on Friday.
Next year's world championship tournament will be played in Maine.
Volleyball Aigles lose two matches
HALIFAX -- The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues are still looking for their first win of the season in the Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball conference.
The defending AUS champion Aigles Bleues fell 3-1 to the Saint Mary's Huskies yesterday to drop their record to 0-7. Scores were: 21-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-14.
Moncton also lost 3-1 to the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday. Scores were: 15-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-20. Veronique Carroll had 29 assists for the Aigles Bleues.
Meanwhile, the Mount Allison Mounties and St. Thomas Tommies split a pair of Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association women's volleyball weekend matches in Fredericton.
The Tommies won 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 15-25, 25-23) on Saturday. The Mounties rebounded for a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-11) victory yesterday.
Moncton judo club wins seven medals
FREDERICTON -- Members of Moncton's Musa Betsu-Kyu Judo Club won seven medals at the Fredericton Fall Classic tournament during the weekend.
Philippe Richer, Melanie Blanchard, Laurent Poirier, Gordon Howard and Kenny Duffy each captured gold medals.
Bronze medals were won by Michael Mansbridge and Jeannot McClure.
Junior Vito's post 7-3 win
MINTO -- Glenden Murphy scored three goals and assisted on another to lead the short-staffed Moncton Vito's to a 7-3 win over the Grand Lake Moose Wild in a New Brunswick Junior B Hockey League game Saturday night at the Minto Arena.
David Cormier, with two, Mitch Conrod and Matt Doiron also scored for the Vito's. Brett Carroll and Launce Burdock each had two assists.
Max Lebreche, Scott Ryan and Evan Peters each tallied for the Wild.
Matt Cooling was the winning goaltender while Peter Hamilton and Andrew Morgan shared the loss.
Vito's host the Tri-County River Cats of Fredericton Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Red Ball Internet Centre.
Peewee Vees take Harvey tourney
FREDERICTON -- District 6 Rallye Motors Vees of southeastern New Brunswick defeated the host Fredericton Capitals 4-1 yesterday to win the Buster Harvey Memorial peewee hockey tournament.
Vees went undefeated over the weekend and reached the finals by beating the Kennebacasis Vito's in the semifinals. Vees won four other games in the round-robin.
Vees host the West-Kent Aces on Saturday at 1:50 p.m. at the Kay Arena.
Canadian wins judo gold medal
APIA, Samoa -- Guillaume Perrault of Longueuil, Que., won the gold medal in the men's 81-kilogram event at a World Cup judo event yesterday.
Perrault defeated Flavio Canton of Brazil in the final.
