CAMPBELLTON - The Miramichi Timberwolves didn't take long to taste victory in Maritime Junior A Hockey League exhibition play.
The Timberwolves defeated the Restigouche Tigers 7-2 in their opening pre-season game last night.
Jeremy Barron and Keith Bombaugh each had a goal and two assists for the T-Wolves while Ryan Taylor, Dylan Bellmore, Kielyn Copage, Robbie Veriker and Justin Barbour each scored once for Miramichi. Nathan McQuaid and Kevin Saunders each added two assists for Miramichi.
Patrick Smith and Kyle Rose each had a goal for the Tigers.
Miramichi led 2-0 after the first period and 6-2 after two.
Brennan Laite started in goal for the T-Wolves with Brent Pierro playing the second half and allowing two goals. Together they stopped 27 of 29 shots for the win.
Andrew Court suffered the loss for the Tigers playing the first half. Miramichi out shot the Tigers 39-29.
The game was the first of three exhibition games scheduled for the T-Wolves and new head coach and general manager Billy McGuigan was pleased with what he saw.
"The Tigers came out hard in the first 10 minutes and were quite physical, but we weathered the storm and came out on top on the scoreboard and in the physical department as well," McGuigan said. "They thought they could intimidate us and had us on our heels a bit, but we adapted and settled in to control the game.
"Overall it was a good team effort from both the vets and the rookies. Newcomer Jeremy Barron had a three-point night and rookies Nick Brown and MacKenzie Kierstead had good shifts on defence.
"Both rookie goalies played well. Now we are ready for Summerside."
Miramichi hosts the Summerside Western Capitals at the Miramichi Civic Centre tonight at 7:30 p.m. and then host the Tigers Monday at 7 p.m. at the Civic Centre.
Meanwhile, the 1-2 Dieppe Commandos will travel to Amherst tonight to face the 2-1 hometown Ramblers in a 7 p.m. exhibition game.
