UK nurse can't return home

To The Editor:

In response to Myriam Breau's letter to the editor, Myriam's words reflect nursing around the world.

Most nurses choose that career for the love of their patients and the feeling of contributing to the greater good of society. Trust me, nothing feels greater than helping patients and their families through stressful and difficult situations.

Nurses are restrained by the health services in which they work, the shortages of staff is beginning to show, not only in the patient's care but in the well-being of the nurses.

The thought of patients having to be cared in the hallway should shock everyone, especially those that run health services.

I am a registered pediatric nurse who currently works in the Neonatal Intensive Care area in the UK. I am a native of Riverview and have been trying for the last year to come home and set my roots back at 'home'.

I, unfortunately, cannot be registered as a nurse in Canada due to my specialist pediatric degree from the UK. I am being forced to return to university to gain theory and practice in areas I do not wish to practice in.

The reality of the situation is that I cannot afford to return to university full-time again, so I will be returning 'home' and forced to give up my career I have spent the last five years building.

So N.B. government, tell me this: if you have shortages of nurses, why are you turning me away?
