Expanding park is necessary
To The Editor:
The concept of an expansion of Fundy Park is a sound one.
The idea that ATV enthusiasts will have their noses out of joint is ridiculous. The province is criss-crossed with trails and exclusion from this area for environmental purposes would not cause undue hardship.
With the severe environmental changes brought on by forestry practises, an expansion to this refuge is a no brainer.
It would seem Mr. Steeves and Mr. Moore have an agenda other than that of their constituents.

Listeriosis input sought
To The Editor:
Help us to help you! Give me your views on listeriosis.
Last summer Canadians began asking themselves whether their food was safe. Even though few had heard of it before, the term "listeriosis" became a household word.
Faith in the safety of the food supply was shaken when roughly 200 meat products produced by Maple Leaf Foods were pulled off grocery store shelves. Sadly, we also learned of the tragic deaths of 22 individuals linked to this disease.
I was appointed by the prime minister as an independent investigator to review the factors that contributed to the listeriosis outbreak in the summer of 2008. I believe that ensuring the safety of our food supply is a priority for all of us. As the independent investigator, I feel a strong obligation to find out the facts and make recommendations to protect the health of Canadians.
It is important that I hear directly from those affected and any other consumers who may have been concerned about the outbreak. To help develop my recommendations, I am interested in learning:
* How you first learned about the outbreak (e.g. TV, newspaper, radio, word of mouth)?
* Did you use the Internet to find information about listeriosis? Which websites were most useful? If you visited the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's website, was the information easy to locate and understand, and was it helpful?
* Did the information you received -- from whatever source -- tell you what you needed to know? For example, were you aware that products had been recalled and how to tell if packages in your refrigerator were on the recall list? Were the symptoms of listeriosis clearly communicated to help you determine whether you, or someone close to you, should seek medical advice?
* How well do you think the crisis was managed? What else do you think should have been done?
Please let me know what you think. You can go to the "Listening to Canadians" link on the investigation website at www.listeriosis-listeriose.investigation-enquete.gc.ca or send an e-mail to contacts@li.listeriosis-enquete.gc.ca.
My role as investigator ends on July 20, 2009. I hope to hear from you soon. Your opinions do count!
All of us have a duty to help ensure that such a tragedy doesn't happen again.

Open season on motorcycles?
To The Editor:
After the latest motorcycle-car mishap it would appear there is very little the average motorcyclist can do to protect themselves.
I mean if a motorist still hits a motorcycle when it is a police officer with his emergency lights on, what chance do the rest of us motorcyclists have?
The Times & Transcript reported that charges may not be pressed against the driver of that vehicle. You must be kidding me!
This is not optional, they must charge the driver of that vehicle or else just declare open season on all motorcyclists everywhere! I don't think it is much of stretch for everyone to agree that there are no "minor" motorcycle accidents. Anytime a motorcycle goes down, the chances the driver of that bike not getting hurt or killed are very slim, and thankfully in this case the police officer didn't get hurt worse. In a day and age where motorists must wear seatbelts and bicyclists must wear Styrofoam helmets or face fines, isn't it time we look out for the motorcyclists?
Charge this driver with the appropriate offences under the Motor Vehicle Act and send a message to the public that it is not open season on motorcyclists!
Todd Steeves,
Moncton

A couple of weeks ago in Chicago, a woman was doing her nails while driving - she rear-ended and killed a woman motorcyclist, who was stopped at a red light.
We need a distracted driving law (including cell phones, doing your nails, shaving, eating, etc) with harsh punishments!
