NBers in Ottawa for ringette camp

OTTAWA -- Four players from Dieppe and one from Moncton will be among a group of eight New Brunswickers travelling here this weekend for the Ringette Canada under-19 east identification camp.

The four-day weekend camp here and another in Regina is the start of the process to identify and select athletes to train and prepare for competition at the Junior World Ringette Championship, which will take place in Europe in the summer of 2009.

Vanessa Hannah, Pascale d'Astour, Joelle Proulx and Jasmine LeBlanc are the four Dieppe players making the trip. Jessica Snowden is the Moncton player headed to camp at Carleton University.

Other New Brunswickers are Martine Caissie of Bouctouche, Julie-Eve Finn of Bathurst, and Nicole Forest of Shediac.

The camps will run in a tournament format, with games starting on Saturday afternoon.

Following the camp, Team East will be cut down to 45 athletes who will come together in July for a final selection camp, while Team West will be cut down to 35 athletes. Rosters for both teams will be finalized in early January 2009.

The Junior World Ringette Championship is an International Ringette Federation event that provides an opportunity for developing countries to attend an international event without having to face powerhouses such as Finland's and Canada's national teams. Both Finland and Canada will send junior national teams (U19) and other participating countries will send their regular national teams.
