Varsity Reds stun Aigles

UNB nets two goals in final two minutes and takes 5-4 shootout win from UdeM

Leading 4-2 with under two minutes to go, it all looked rosy for the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus.
John Scott Dickson and the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds had a different idea.
Dickson scored twice in the final two minutes, including the game-tying goal with three seconds to go, and David Bowman fired the lone goal in a shootout as UNB stormed back to stun Moncton 5-4 in an Atlantic University Sport men's hockey conference game Saturday.
A crowd of 1,580 at the J.-Louis Levesque Arena watched as Aigles Bleus goaltender Kevin Lachance and Varsity Reds counterpart Derek Yeomans didn't allow a goal through the first four rounds of the shootout.
UNB's fifth shooter, defenceman Bowman, scored his second goal of the game and then Yeomans stopped Moncton's final shooter, Remi Gautreau, to give the visitors the win.
"This is a really hard loss," said Aigles Bleus head coach Bob Mongrain. "We played well for 50 minutes and to lose like that is hard.
"UNB's experience made the difference. We know that UNB has a good team and we lost on details. We have one point in the standings and we can keep our head up. We must learn from this game and that is what I told the players. This game is going to help us in the future."
Moncton remains in first place with a 9-1-1 record. It was the first home loss of the season for the No. 2 nationally ranked Aigles Bleus. The No. 8 Varsity Reds are tied for third place at 6-2-2.
Dickson, with a pair, Bowman, and Kevin Henderson scored in regulation time for UNB while Hunter Tremblay chipped in with two assists.
Pierre-Andre Bureau, Guillaume Parenteau, Ian Girard and Gautreau answered for Moncton. Billy Bezeau had two assists in the loss.
Yeomans finished with 30 saves in the Varsity Reds net. Lachance made 36 saves for the Aigles Bleus.
Moncton led 3-2 after two periods and took a two-goal lead on Girard's marker just 1:48 into the third.
But Dickson proved to be the UNB hero on this night. He cut the lead to one with his first goal with 1:45 remaining to play and then tied the game with just three seconds to go.
The Aigles Bleus complete their first-half schedule with three road games, beginning with a trip to Nova Scotia for games Friday against the Saint Mary's Huskies and Saturday against the St. Francis Xavier X-Men.
