BARACHOIS - Glynn Nott of Burton captured the Maritime Super Sportsman Series 100 at Centre for Speedway here yesterday.

Nott, who has competed in a number of Maritime sportsman series at the Barachois speedway over the past few years, finally tasted victory by leading the second half of the 100-lap feature event. He started the race in 11th position on the 24-car grid and used some timely passes to make his way up to the lead pack, taking the lead on lap No. 53 when he passed Claude Gaudet of Grand Barachois on the backstretch.

Over the final half of the event, and through a few restarts, Nott was able to fend off challenges from Gaudet and Mike Power of Salisbury to finally pick up his first win at the Centre for Speed. Gaudet had to settle for second, while Power took home third place.

Cal Hatfield of Rothesay led the first 50 laps, but mechanical problems forced him to the pits midway through the race. Heat winners were Hatfield and Bert Cormier of Bouctouche while Luc Bourgeois of Memramcook took the trophy dash.

The Maritime sportsman series is a four-race series within the South East Challenge, a first-year partnership between the Centre for Speed and River Glade Speedway, who will run a combined, two-track points championship.

Robert Légère of Tracadie claimed the mini stock 50-lap feature for his first career feature win. Légère crossed the finish line, just ahead of Pierre Gautreau of Shediac and Martin Landry of Grand Barachois. Landry won the heat and semifinal.

In street stock action, Rick Cashol of Saint John won the feature, in front of Victor Vienneau of Cocagne and John Doucette of Summerside, P.E.I. Vienneau was the heat winner while Doucette took the semifinal.

In the four fun division, it was also a first career trip to victory lane for Mike Weagle of Petitcodiac as he was first across the stripe in both the feature and semifinal. Doucette placed second and Eldon Campbell of Moncton third in the feature. Campbell won the heat.

Racing resumes in Barachois Sunday at 2 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Carquest Maritime Pro Stock Tour's Parts for Trucks 100 was postponed because of inclement weather Saturday at Speedway 660 in Geary. It's the second consecutive week a tour race has been rained out. The next series race is Saturday at Scotia Speedworld in Halifax.

Racing in Geary also resumes Saturday.

Blue Mountain Speedway in Big River, just outside of Bathurst, opens July 11 while racing at Miramichi City Speedway begins July 18.
