Grand-Digue arm wrestler takes titles
SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. - Grande-Digue's Sylvio Bourque won a pair of titles yesterday at the Canadian arm wrestling championships in Summerside.
Bourque won the left arm championships in the 75-kilogram division in the grand masters class (50 and older) and the 80-kilogram division in the masters class (40 and older) to give him a total of 10 national titles. It also marked the first time he has won two national titles on the same day.
Bourque also placed second in the 75-kg division for grand masters and was third in the 75-kg division of the open class.
Other New Brunswickers also fared well during the weekend.
Jérémie Hachey of Robertville won the right and left arm titles in the junior division for competitors 17-years-old and younger.
Also in junior, Josie King of Fredericton was second in the girls right and left arm sections and Austin Comeay of Oromocto finished second in the right and third in the left division.
Joyce King of Fredericton picked up a pair of victories while Edouard Bourque of Grande-Digue had two second-place showings and Stephen McGrath of Cocagne finished third twice.
Big Red Machine wins charity game
Firefighter Curtis MacFadyen drove in seven runs with a three-run shot in the third and a grand slam in the sixth as the Big Red Machine/Firefighters/Tim Hortons All-Stars topped the Big Blue Wave/Law Enforcement/Wildcats 17-6 in the annual François McDonald Memorial Kidney Foundation of Canada Charity Ball Classic held at Kiwanis Park.
MacFayden picked up the François McDonald Memorial Plaque as the most valuable player on the winning Big Red Machine team. He and firefighter Darren Lund each homered and picked up the Eddie Booth Memorial Plaque as winners of the Tim Hortons Home Run Challenge. J.C. Sawyer, a former Cape Breton Screaming Eagle, homered for the losing team.
The Big Red Machine of Premier Shawn Graham, coached by Pete Gauvin, picked up the Les Melia Memorial Plaque for a fifth consecutive time.
Meanwhile, Moncton Wildcats alumni Adam Pineault homered in the first and made some good defensive plays to win Opposition Leader David Alward's Big Blue Wave team's MVP award, the Melanie Tower Memorial Plaque.
Dalhousie wins summer hoops tourney
DALHOUSIE - New Brunswick's under-16 boys team won the Dalhousie Summer Invitational basketball tournament yesterday at Dalhousie Regional High School.
Richie Wilkins scored 28 points and led New Brunswick to a 97-89 win over the Jacquet River under-19 Tigers in the title game.
Matt Daley had 15 points for New Brunswick while Cameron Montford added 14 and Brad Hovey 12.
Miramichi under-19 Rebels downed Campbellton 88-70 in the third-place game.
Brett Buckley paced Miramichi with 26 points while Alex Robichaud had 16, Robby Lenhart threw in 13 and Darian Martinez chipped in with 13.
Pat McNaughton netted 18 points for Campbellton while Houston Barnaby had 14 and Spencer Barnaby contributed 10.
In earlier games, Jacquet River beat Campbellton 111-66 and N.B. defeated Miramichi 95-70.
Loyalists beat Black Tide ruggers
Fredericton Loyalists beat the Moncton Black Tide 29-22 in the New Brunswick Rugby Union's women's division season-opener Saturday in Moncton.
Sarah Braam led the Loyalists with two tries. Lindsey Brandon added a try and two converts while Monica Nealis and Laura Locklin had a try each.
Kim Sinclair, Jen Miller, Hannah Davies and Katucya Gauvin each scored tries for the Black Tide. Sheila McKee added a convert.
