Highlanders open puck season with victory

MacNaughton thumps Tantramar 8-2

Bernice MacNaughton Highlanders got two-goal efforts from three players en route to an 8-2 triumph over the Tantramar Titans in Eastern Conference high school hockey action last night at the Tim Hortons 4-Ice Centre.

It was the opening game of the season for the two clubs.

Jeremy Melanson, Brandon Lamb and Curtis Leet each netted a pair of goals for the Highlanders while solo goals went to James Donovan and Blake Williams.

Nicholas Miner and Nolan Leger replied for the Titans.

Tim Tucker was the winning goalie while Sam Burry shouldered the loss.

MacNaughton outshot Tantramar 29-20 and held period leads of 3-2 and 5-2.

League action resumes tomorrow with Clement-Cormier Cavaliers facing MacNaughton at the Coliseum at 7:30 p.m.

On Thursday, Moncton High Purple Knights travel to Shediac at take on the Louis-J Robichaud Patriotes at the Festival Arena at 7:45 p.m.

* RENOUS -- Jordan Lloyd scored with just 2:28 left in the third period to lift the James M. Hill Tommies to a 6-5 win over the Blackville High Golden Hawks in an exhibition high school hockey game here Sunday.

Alexander Williston, Dylan O'Reilly, Jesse Sippley, Devon McKenzie and Shane Dinan also scored for the Tommies.

Jordan Buggie, with two, Kyle Morehouse, Eldon Duffy and T.J. Donahue answered for the Golden Hawks.

Ransen Harris was the winning goaltender and Jesse Underhill took the loss.

* SHEDIAC -- Louis-J-Robichaud Patriotes opened the Eastern Conference High School Girls Hockey League regular season with a 2-1 win over the Tantramar Titans Sunday at the Shediac Festival Arena. Veronique Cormier and Josée Gallant scored for the Patriotes and Breanne Lee replied for the Titans.

Clément-Cormier Cavalières blanked the Bernice MacNaughton Highlanders 8-0 in Bouctouche.

Samantha Belliveau and Josée Goguen each fired three goals for the Cavalières while Cynthia Leger chipped in with two.

L'Odyssée Olympiens defeated the Riverview High Royals 2-1.

League play resumes Thursday when the Royals host the Harrison Trimble Trojans at 7 p.m. at the Byron Dobson Arena and the Olympiens meet the Highlanders at 8:15 p.m. at the J-Louis Levesque Arena.
