Mounties' Ross is top athlete

SACKVILLE -- Mount Allison football star Gary Ross, a receiver and return specialist, has won the Joey's Pizza and Pasta Mountie male athlete of the month award for October.

Ross captured the Atlantic University Sport conference football athlete of the week honours three times over the month and broke three league records. He broke the AUS mark for most catches in one season (60), most career receptions (172) and he moved into top spot in AUS career receiving yards with 2,582. He is currently enrolled in fourth-year science and plans to pursue a career in dentistry and coaching.

Lauren Ledwell, a midfielder with the soccer team, was named female athlete of the year.

In her final year at Mount Allison, the Charlottetown native has been a three-time academic All-Canadian and is enrolled in commerce.

Meanwhile, Meghan Corley-Byrne, a goalie withe hockey Mounties, was named athlete of the week.

The Ottawa native turned aside 34 of 36 shots in a 2-0 loss to the St. Francis Xavier X-Women on Saturday. She is currently enrolled in first-year English at Mount Allison, with future plans to become a teacher.

Volleyball player Alex Logue Storr was also nominated.

Slammers beat Hawks to take tourney

FREDERICTON -- The Kennebecasis Valley Slammers beat the Moncton Hawks A side 56-46 yesterday to win the second annual Northside Minor Basketball Association Bantam Girls Invitational at Nashwaaksis Field House.

Jennifer McTague tossed in 10 points for KV. Candice Dude replied with 17 points for the Hawks while Sara Simkins scored five.

The co-host Northside Lions A team won consolation honours in the 14-team event by edging the Riverview A Royals 56-53 in overtime. The teams were tied 49-49 at the end of regulation.

Allison Keane scored eight of her 13 points in the final two minutes and overtime as the Lions overcame a 48-43 deficit.

Sarah Armstrong drained a game-high 15 points for the Royals. Sara Banks chipped in with 12, Miranda Lacey eight and Tara Murray six.

Island Jazzystar wins feature

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. -- Island Jazzystar won yesterday afternoon's feature at Summerside Raceway for driver Cory MacPherson in 1:57.3 Real Bond placed second and Paphos was third.

It was the second feature win in a row for Island Jazzystar, owned by Mitchell Tierney of Cornwall, P.E.I.

Carrera Angel, owned and driven by Rocky Schurman of Summerside, won the Isabelle and Ivan Cameron Memorial race in 2:01.3 over In Blue and Diamond Hard.

Gary Chappell and Stacy Lund had another productive day. The driver-trainer combination teamed up on three winning performances when Run the Mark rallied to win in 2:04, Ds Katie Spirit scored in the $3,000 claimers class in 2:00.3 while Triange completed the triple.

Racing resumes Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

Maine bowler wins individual title

HALIFAX -- American Mike Morgan won the individual title at the world men's candlepin bowling championship yesterday at Halifax Fairlanes.

Morgan, of the Maine-based USA East team, defeated teammate 136-114 in the final of the single knockout tournament.

Chris Hollett of Halifax's McLaughlin Trucking team finished third.

Team competition begins today at 9:30 a.m. A total of 24 teams, including Moncton Fairlanes/Mrs. Dunster's, will compete in the tournament, that concludes Saturday afternoon.

Mario's Sub of Massachusetts is the defending champion.
