Krista Betts, Luke Donovan among those honoured at Sport New Brunswick Awards banquet

FREDERICTON - Bass River wrestler Krista Betts was named female athlete of the year and paraplegic skier Luke Donovan of Dalhousie earned male athlete of the year honours at the Pitney Bowes Sport New Brunswick Awards banquet here Saturday.

Betts, who competes for the University of New Brunswick and is a former Canada Games gold medallist, participated in several national international wrestling events this year.

Donovan is seeking a spot on the Canadian team for the 2010 Paralympic Games in Vancouver. He suffered a back injury skiing in 2003.

Meanwhile, New Brunswick men's wrestling team that represented the province at the Canada Games in Prince Edward Island last summer was awarded the Roly McLenahan Award as team of the year.

Two team members were medal winners at the games, including Jean-François Godin of Beresford and Corey Boudreau of Moncton. The team had 11 wrestlers. Others were Andrew Harris and Cody Saulis of Oromocto, Trent Moses of Saint Stephen, Pierre-Philippe Ouellette of Beresford, Mitch Player, Jason Simmons and Bobby Simmons of Geary, Andy Sandford of Fredericton and Keith Shaw of Rothesay.

Allyssa Cleaves of St. Stephen, the only New Brunswick gold medallist for New Brunswick at the Canada Games, received the female President's Award and the Spirit of Sport Award.

Javelin thrower Caleb Jones, of Saint John, received the male President's Award. The Bell Aliant team of the year Award went to the Canada Games men's eight in rowing who won a bronze medal while official of the year was wrestling mentor Christopher Falconer of Riverview.

Tom Longboat award winners were Lucy Francis, Trey Lewis and Dakota Bernard (tie), all from hockey, while Sheila Francis was named female coach of the year and Jason Peters male coach of the year.
