Mets face Ironmen tomorrow

Moncton Mets and Chatham Ironmen will try to get their N.B. Senior Baseball League make-up game in tomorrow night.

The game is slated for Kiwanis Park at 6:30 p.m.

The clubs were to play Monday but that game was cancelled because of rain.

The game will be the first of the season for the Ironmen while it will be the second for the Mets.

The Mets dropped their opening game 5-1 to the Summerside Chevys on Sunday.

Hunt leads rugby victory

Riverview High Royals downed Mathieu-Martin Vedettes 42-0 in Northeastern Conference girls rugby action yesterday.

Jillian Hunt scored five tries (25 points) for Riverview while Alicia Kenny, Amanda Steeves and Gabriella Jonsson-Edfast each scored single tries.

Jonsson-Edfast converted her own try. Halftime score was 10-0 for RHS.

RHS finished up the regular season with a record of 3-1 and will face l'Odyssée Olympiennes tomorrow (Thursday) at Riverview High Field at 5:15.

This is the seeding game that will determine first and second place in the Eastern Division.

Meanwhile, in another game, Clement-Cormier Cavaliers topped Louis J. Robichaud Patriotes 24-7.

Julie Cormier and Michelle Caissie each scored a pair of tries for Clement-Cormier. Caissie also had a pair of two-point converts.

Danielle LeBlanc had a try and convert for LJR.

Plume's 72 wins at Petitcodiac

PETITCODIAC -- Brent Plume fired a 1-over-par 72 to capture the opening tournament of the season at Petitcodiac Golf Club on Monday.

Plume fired nines of 36-36 to capture the title. Dave McMackin was second with a 75 while Brent Matheson finished third with a 76.

Low net winner in the first division was Jim MacAdam with a 65 (77-12).

Second division low gross honours went to Rick McQuinn while Mike McCully was second with an 83. New winners were Mike McCully (63) and Mac Robinson (66).

In the ladies division, Iona McCully won the net with 64 while Sue Chambers was second with 68.

Dieppe to hold tryouts

The Dieppe/Memramcook Minor Baseball Association will be holding tryouts for the mosquito A provincial baseball team (ages 10 and 11) soon.

Tryouts will be held tomorrow and Tuesday, May 27 at the Amirault No. 1 baseball field in St. Anselme, starting at 6:30 both nights.

All interested players are invited to come out.

Dieppe Vees seek coach

The Dieppe/Memramcook Voyageurs of the N.B. Junior Hockey League are now accepting applications for the position of head coach.

The organization will accept applications until May 31.

The Voyageurs play out of the facilities in Dieppe and Memramcook. Inquiries for the position can be made by contacting Ron LeBlanc at 852-4643.

Lewisville needs few coaches

Lewisville Minor Hockey Association is seeking applications for competitive coaches for various classifications.

Coaches are needed for midget, bantam, peewee AA, peewee A and atom AA and A.

Soccer referee clinics slated

A series of soccer referee clinics for teenagers and adults interested in refereeing Codiac Soccer games this summer are planned for June.

Two New Brunswick Soccer Referee clinics are scheduled -- June 7 for boys and girls ages 12 and 13, and June 1 and 8 for 14-year-olds to adults.

Codiac Soccer hopes to have 50 referees trained and ready for the upcoming season which will begin later in June.

Cy Young pitcher on DL

SAN DIEGO -- Reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the San Diego Padres yesterday with a strained and swollen right elbow.

The move was retroactive to Thursday, a day after he lasted just four innings against the Chicago Cubs.

The Padres made the decision Monday night to put Peavy (4-3, 2.91 ERA) on the DL.

The ace felt discomfort in his right elbow the last three or four starts.

He was scratched from his scheduled start Monday night against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Left-handed reliever Joe Thatcher was recalled from triple-A Portland to take Peavy's roster spot.

He was on the opening day roster and went 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA in 16 relief appearances before being optioned to Portland on May 11.

Thatcher made two relief appearances with Portland, posting a 9.00 ERA with no record.

Left-hander Wil Ledezma will take Peavy's spot in the rotation.

Ledezma lasted only four innings in Monday night's 8-2 loss.
