PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. - Jet boats, voyageur canoes and river rafts are among the watercraft that will be used to take people down the Fraser River in an event called Rivermania, running Aug. 24 to Sept. 28.

Along the way, passengers can take part in wilderness excursions and community celebrations.

The event recognizes the 200th anniversary of Simon Fraser's exploration of the river and celebrates First Nations culture.

"Rivermania will help British Columbians and visitors see the mighty Fraser River in a whole new light," said project co-ordinator Georgia Katz.

The journey down the river from Prince George to Steveston, B.C., is divided into 18 segments. Passengers can ride in just one or as many as they want.

Communities participating in Rivermania include Quesnel, Soda Creek, Williams Lake, Lillooet, Lytton, Boston Bar, Yale, Hope, Harrison Hot Springs, Mission, Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Fort Langley, New Westminster and Delta.

Some sample prices: the Aug. 26 segment from Prince George to Quesnel costs $524 per person via motorized raft, $1,070 by jet boat. A canoe ride Sept. 17 from Hope to Chehalis costs $68 for adults, $62 for children. The segment can also be done by motorized raft for $60 per person.

Multi-day packages are also available.

Rivermania is one of the flagship events of BC150, as the province celebrates the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Crown colony of British Columbia.
